“Real thing Santa.” Boy, that is a bodacious claim to make
isn't it? Well, not exactly. You see back in 1992, on December
23rd to be exact, Tom Brokaw said on NBC Nightly News, "This
Santa can only be described as the real thing."
Tom said that because he was introducing a report by Bob
Dotson about how this Santa was collecting old used wheelchairs
and other equipment and after refurbishing the items, giving
them away to people who needed them and couldn't afford to buy
them or didn't have insurance to get what they needed. (Watch
and listen to that report.)
This Santa, also known as Ed Butchart, has a complex
history. Check the About Santa
page to learn some of that history. Go to
FODAC.org to read about the
ministry Tom and Bob talk about. Consider this; the
ministry started in the garage of Ed's house and now is located
in a 68,885 square foot building. Seventeen jobs have been
created. Ed is not on the payroll, and there are over 40
people who volunteer on at least a part-time basis. More than
17,000 wheelchairs have been given away and over 60,000 people
have been helped in some way by the ministry. When you check
all that out you will see that Tom was right! Explore the rest
of Santa's site and see for yourself!
